Hi all, looking to upgrade to a new
phone ( & plan) for the 4wd. comments about recent experiences with mobiles accepting an external
antenna of say 6db or better for the 900mhz range. considering a multiband- (825 to 960) to also do the laptop. it seems metro information is varied & coloured ( & old??). Ex

Samsung C5220 accepts an external aerial and is a "blue tick "
phone....the external aerial that I have also connects to the Telstra "elite" nextg modem that I use on the computer...the
phone can also be used as a modem....do not know about the 6db or better bit , just that it works o.k. when we are camped along the
Murray river...cheers

I second the above from first hand experience but also add the following
Post paid (plan) sim WILL work in that Samsung C5220 pre paid...we use that on the wifes
phone because it is a better
phone for us than the stupid one we got a plan
Also Telstra have them on a run out special at the moment for $69
They dont have any fancy things...just a good simple
phone that works as good blue tick and receives a patch lead plug

Good, my wife is looking it up online, havent seen it over here, they seem to push the " tradies special" Nokia T90, not many of the newerones seem to have a patch line input. ...cheers & thanks.

I've got the Telstra (Tough)T90, very basic
phone, but it has worked extremely
well on our tours around OZ, I've got a Little Devil
antenna, with patch leads for the
phone and laptop, recently in the
Flinders Ranges, I managed to get a couple of bars on the
phone while at Rawson Station, speaking to another camper there, I think he thought I was Bull ....ing him, Our site was one of the higher positioned sites.

Its worth thinking thru what your whole goal is Itzgonow.
Noting wrong with C5220 but the external
antenna connection is weak , and may not last long if you use the
phone mobile.
One of
mine was in a standard aftermarket holder and when car went into a deep rut ,
phone came out and was held by the external aerial connection which promtly pulled the socket off the phones circuit board.
The connection would only be good for less than 100 uses anyway and the awkward positioning of it on this and similar phones makes it hard to use.
So if using it 4wding and you leave the car and wish to take
phone its a bit messy.
The classic 6120 was being sold off cheap recently also , it has no ext ant , but performs about 3db better anyway.
If used with a passive coupler for ext connection ( about 3db loss over direct connection) then you get about the same mobile performance but its significantly easier to take shopping etc.

Hi Robin & thanks, the passive seems to make sense & is I guess more in line with newer technology, I do have concern with the fragile patchline on my wireless broadband dongle. What brand is the Classic 6120 & does it have blue tooth ?? Do you use the
phone as a modem for your internet as part of a package when out & about ?? or a separate plan & modem ?? Thanks forthe direction.. Cheers.

Not denying that this actually happened...the socket coming out of the
phone...but having had this
phone and a similar one and using the outside aerial on both phones...I do find it rather hard to believe that it could happen...but I suppose stranger things have happened........................

Yeh rooster350, ok I looked at both your profiles & you are really
well set up for the remote & rough stuff, I notice Robin was using an aftermarket holder which may have been diffrnt ??also driving conditions & style change and I am pleased to have all comments as I NOW tow ( more slowly) an ATV Caravan and do less hard rough stuff but still intend to get very remote,. at the end of the day there is always the H.F trans ( or UHF) but not WHAT i'M TRYING TO set up for now... they say the newer passive connections are ok & most new current Bluetooth phones do not do patch lines?? thanks again & cheers ...ltzgonow.

In our coles supermarket catalogue this week from thursday 7th (vic), the classic 6120 is $49 - to thinl I paid $300 when first came out some 3 years ago !
Geez i might get one just for parts.

well both as a
phone and modem, we've done both. Force make a cradle which allows in car charging, data connection and an inductive connection to the
antenna of your choice.
We also use a bluetooth handsfree unit.

Ozhumvee, sounds like we are getting closer to the answers. I am out of contract & will soon upgrade. Sounds like telstra is the only answer, so the
phone choice is all important. customer
feedback iss adly still poor but coverage obviously good. Do you use a 900hhz stick or multi?... cheers and thanks. ltzgonow

I use the a Telstra ZTE 165 series
phone which has a pop up
antenna and
antenna external port. Via the external
antenna we have been getting reception in areas where all else has failed. I use this
phone as a Pre-Paid emergency device as my normal
phone is an Iphone. There are various 7-9DB antennas with patch cable to suit a wide range of phones.

Mine was a referb
phone hasnt missed a beat, reception wise its the best thats why I bought it, $150 on Ebay. Yes I know the
phone has had some issues overtime, perhaps I have been lucky, that said we go away as a group and you cant get reception unless you use this
phone with an ext
antenna, works as a modem to, for the price I paid been a great investment, not sure if there is anything better going around at the moment.
